Taking place this November 19th and 20th

East Galway dairy farmer Mella Briscoe has been elected incoming President of Dairy Women Ireland (DWI), as the organisation prepares for its fifth annual conference in Portlaoise this month.

Mella, who farms with her husband, Kevin Muldoon, and their two sons, Jack and Naise, near Portumna, was elected at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting on Friday, 16 October.

Having previously served as Vice President, she brings valuable experience of family dairy farming to the role.

Her appointment comes during a period of significant growth for DWI, which reported a 30% increase in membership during 2026 and organised 17 regional events across the country.

Speaking following her election, Mella said it was a huge honour to take on the presidency and paid tribute to outgoing President Fiona O’Donnell for her commitment and leadership.

Looking ahead to 2027, Mella said her main focus would be on the “women in wellies”, with plans to meet women involved in dairy farming, hear their experiences and identify ways the organisation can better support them.

Through its six regional teams, DWI provides opportunities for women in the dairy sector to connect, share knowledge and build supportive networks.

Mella’s appointment coincides with preparations for the Dairy Women Ireland Conference 2026, which takes place on Friday, 20 November at the Killeshin Hotel in Portlaoise.

This year’s theme, “Our Time Is Now,” celebrates the contribution of women to Irish agriculture and encourages them to embrace opportunities and play an active role in shaping the industry’s future.

A highlight of the conference will be keynote speaker Dr. Doreen Corridan, who will bring her expertise and insights to an event dedicated to celebrating and empowering women across the dairy sector.

The conference promises a day of inspiration, learning and connection, bringing together women from across the country to share experiences and celebrate their contribution to farming.

There is also an added incentive for those booking early. Anyone who purchases a conference ticket before Monday, 16 November, will be entered into a draw to win one of Dairy Women Ireland’s brand-new jerseys.

Women involved in dairy farming and the wider agricultural sector are encouraged to attend and become part of the growing DWI community.
