Girl, 16, killed in hit-and-run in Navan

A 16-year-old girl has been killed in a hit-and-run in Navan, Co Meath.

The girl was walking on the Slane Road at around 8.20pm on Saturday when the crash happened.

A statement from An Garda Siochana said: “The car involved failed to remain at the scene.”

A man in his 20s was later arrested “in connection with the investigation” and a “car has been seized for technical and forensic examination”, the statement said.

Following the crash, the girl was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where she was pronounced dead.

The man is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in the Eastern Region.

Gardai said the coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged.

Diversions are in place around the Slane Road (N51) as forensic investigators carry out examinations.

An Garda Siochana appealed for anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward, in particular anyone who may have recorded footage in the area between 8pm and 8.45pm on Saturday.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Navan Garda Station on 046 9036100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
