John Souttar believes something is building at Rangers after Celtic victory

John Souttar claims there is a “real togetherness” at Rangers after Saturday’s statement win at Celtic ignited their William Hill Premiership title hopes.

The Light Blues came from behind to beat their Old Firm rivals 3-1 thanks to a Youssef Chermiti brace and a strike from Mikey Moore to move level on points with the second-placed Hoops and six behind leaders Hearts.

Boss Danny Rohl has nine wins and two draws from 12 league fixtures since taking over from Russell Martin in October.

When he came in the Light Blues were sixth, eight points behind Celtic and 13 behind the Jambos and they can build on their weekend win on Tuesday night at home to Aberdeen, who parted company with manager Jimmy Thelin on Sunday.

Asked if he sensed there were trophies in the Rangers team, defender Souttar said: “It’s so early to say that.

“There’s a real togetherness and I think we’re building something here.

“I think we can feel it.

“The manager, everyone involved can feel it, but it’s important we keep backing it up.

“And it’s so early and obviously you don’t win anything this early in the season, so I’ll answer that when the season’s done and hopefully I’m saying ‘yes’.

“It’s difficult to pinpoint one quality. Every manager has their own qualities but I really enjoy working with him.

“He’s clear on what he wants from everyone on the pitch. Tactically he’s really good and he can change it within games and he’s not scared to do it at half-time, obviously you saw the substitution at half-time.

“(Mohamed) Diomande came on (for Thelo Aasgaard) and brought real energy. Thelo was really good the other night, so I think it’s hard to pinpoint one or two things he’s good at but I really enjoy working with him.

“We just need to keep the momentum going, take it game by game and go on to Tuesday because if we don’t back up on Tuesday there’s no point in doing that on Saturday, so every game’s massive and we keep going.”

Souttar paid tribute to goalkeeper Jack Butland who has recovered from his recent horror mistake against Hearts which cost a goal in the 2-1 defeat.

The 32-year-old former Stoke and Crystal Palace player was beaten by a drive from Yang Hyun-jun at Parkhead but again pulled off some crucial saves to help take the three points.

Souttar said: “He was really good. When you play the amount of games that Jack plays, there’s going to be one or two mistakes. It’s only natural.

“That happens to every goalkeeper in the world when you play that many games, there’s no such thing as perfection.

“So, there’s going to be one or two moments, but a lot of times he’s come up with massive moments for this club and he continues to do so, and it’s obviously enjoyable to play with a goalkeeper of that stature.

“We’ve got Liam Kelly behind him, who’s an exceptional goalie, so we’re lucky on the goalkeeper front.”
