A look at the winners and losers of the transfer window in the Premier League

A summer transfer window of record spending is over after the deadline passed on Monday evening.

Premier League clubs spent over £3billion, but not every team will be happy with their business.

Here, the PA news agency takes a look at the winners and losers of the transfer window.

Winners

Liverpool

As the biggest spenders, Liverpool twice broke the British transfer record as they substantially strengthened their squad.

After signing Florian Wirtz for £116million, they added Alexander Isak for £125m on deadline day, having already spent £30m on Jeremie Frimpong and £40m on Milos Kerkez.

They balanced the books by selling Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Jarell Quansah and even the late collapse of Marc Guehi’s protracted move from Crystal Palace does not take the shine off a stunning window of business.

Arsenal

Arsenal again backed Mikel Arteta in his bid to finally get over the line in the Premier League title race. The capture of Viktor Gyokeres finally ends their search for a striker while Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke add more creativity and threat.

Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Cristhian Mosquera, Piero Hincapie and Kepa Arrizabalaga also arrived to give the Gunners a scary amount of depth to an already excellent squad.

Nottingham Forest

Despite a civil war between boss Nuno Espirito Santo and head of football Edu Gaspar, Forest acted definitively to give themselves the best chance of success this season.

They twice broke their club record to bring in Dan Ndoye and Omari Hutchinson, while also spending another £30million on James McAtee. Douglas Luiz returned to the Premier League from Juventus, where Nicolo Savona also joined from.

Oleksandr Zinchenko and Dilane Bakwa were deadline-day arrivals while the best piece of business was keeping England international Morgan Gibbs-White after being on the brink of losing him to Tottenham.

Losers

Newcastle

The late move of the Sweden international to Liverpool came after weeks of insisting he was not for sale, with the relationship between the two turning sour.

And while all that was going on there were high-profile misses on Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Sesko, Joao Pedro and Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa’s ambitions to compete with the top six have been curtailed by having to work under strict financial restraints due to UEFA and PSR rules.

It left them effectively having to operate on a one-in, one-out basis and the sale of homegrown talent Jacob Ramsey particularly hurt the midlands club.

There were late arrivals of Harvey Elliott from Liverpool and Manchester United misfit Jadon Sancho, but Villa have not strengthened sufficiently to kick on.

Brentford

Not only did Brentford lose their manager this summer, they also lost their three best players in a significant blow to their chances.

Thomas Frank’s move to Spurs was followed by Bryan Mbeumo leaving for Manchester United, while Norgaard went to Arsenal and Wissa forced through a late move to Newcastle.

They did spend £42.5m on Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth, but the Bees have never seemed so vulnerable in the Premier League.
