They say the pen is mightier than the sword and indeed it is true. Famous moments in history capture those points where the dignitaries sign agreements to co-operate, end wars, share resources. The pen seals the deal.
Closer to home our policies drawn up to guide our lives demonstrate the power of words to shape how we live. Two words that arguably messed up our ability to connect in recent years were social distancing.
Powerful in how they encouraged people to behave and redefine relationships. We cannot underestimate the power of words.
With this in mind I increasingly reflect on the words that I am drawn to and use often.
Wisdom and Tradition are two words that stand out.
Wisdom: The ability to discern or judge what is true, right, or lasting; insight. Common sense; good judgment. The sum of learning through the ages; knowledge.
Wisdom of the crowds.. I love this concept where an inherent knowledge is distilled down through the ages… trial and error etc and basically what works! It is quite distinct from expertise – a high degree of knowledge on a particular subject.
Our subjective education system has shaped what is defined as the knowledge to know but there is ample signs to show the system is hijacked with agendas depending on the era.
I recognise I bristle at the word “expert” now as a result. Have you noticed we are regularly encouraged to trust the experts?
We aren’t encouraged to trust the wisdom of the crowds. Yet time and again when all else fails this is what we return to. Food is a rich topic to delve into when it comes to wisdom. Safe to say it takes up a lot of brain energy…
Tradition: A mode of thought or behavior followed by a people continuously from generation to generation; a custom or usage.
In our modern life progress in recent decades it is fair to say we have been encouraged to disregard tradition. Old fashioned and basically uncool it was easy to seduce us with TV and modern gadgets.
But modernity has brought its fair share of problems. Chronic health problems being one of them.
The high price of convenience unfortunately taking its toll. So much so that tradition is starting to sound attractive again.
From trad sessions to trad wives we are seeing a move toward more traditional foods as social media introduces us to the glamour of the old days.
It is no wonder that I resonate with the wise traditions dietary principles of the Weston A Price Foundation. Check them out!
