O’ Connell’s Butchers: Gold Medal win puts local Limerick butchers in Neven’s Christmas Spotlight

O’Connell’s Butchers in Limerick has added yet another accolade to its long list of achievements, winning prestigious gold awards at the IFFA International Quality Awards in Frankfurt in May 2025.

The honour marks another high point for the century-old Limerick craft butchers, long celebrated for their excellence in traditional pork and beef products.

Their success continues a remarkable run on the international stage. Following their double wins in France and Germany in 2022, the O’Connell’s team returned to France soon after and secured two additional gold medals at the esteemed Commanderie des Fins Goustiers du Duché d’Alençon.

The judging panel awarded them the coveted Grand Prix d’Excellence for both their renowned Christmas ham and their slow-cooked smoked pork belly products that have become synonymous with the O’Connell’s name.

These achievements have energised the entire team as they prepare for the fast-approaching Christmas season, traditionally the busiest time of the year. Customers across Limerick and the Mid-West are already placing orders well in advance, eager to secure the butcher's award-winning festive favourites.

Adding to their growing acclaim, O’Connell’s Butchers is set to feature in Neven’s Christmas in Limerick which will air
on the 4th December for the 1st of a two part series.

Chef Neven Maguire will meet Antón Togher to showcase the craft and history behind the business. The spotlight will shine on their famous Limerick Christmas Ham - a centrepiece of many local festive tables and a product steeped in tradition.

O’Connell’s Butchers, located at 4/5 Little Catherine Street, Limerick (V94 V585), is now accepting Christmas orders. Along with their celebrated Christmas ham and spiced beef, they offer a full range of premium options, including organic free-range turkey, smoked ham, and traditional green ham.
