Train your brain with the revolutionary LACE programme!

Train your brain with the revolutionary LACE!

In a world filled with sounds, the ability to listen and communicate effectively is important for our overall health and well-being. However, for individuals experiencing hearing loss, navigating conversations in social settings with background noise can be challenging. This is where an auditory rehabilitation programme known as Listening and Communication Enhancement (LACE) can help.

Understanding LACE

LACE is designed to teach the skills and strategies needed for better listening. It was developed to improve comprehension and communication in noisy environments. LACE is not just a tool for those with hearing impairment but also for anyone looking to improve their listening skills in a variety of communication environments.

LACE stands for Listening and Communication Enhancement. The program is based on the premise that listening is a skill that can be enhanced through practice, much like learning a musical instrument or a new language. By using the LACE programme, one can strengthen the auditory processing abilities and increase confidence in communication.

How Does LACE Work?

LACE is accessible and user-friendly, designed for you to work through over several weeks. Users are guided through daily sessions, each lasting about 20 minutes, through a computer, smartphone or tablet interface. The programme keeps track of progress, gradually increasing difficulty to match improvements in listening skills. With its self-paced nature, LACE fits easily into daily routines, making it a practical solution for busy lifestyles.

The Components of LACE

LACE is a comprehensive program, covering various aspects of listening and communication through its modules. There are four primary components:

  1. Speech in Noise: One of the most challenging listening environments is where background noise is present. This module trains you to differentiate speech from noise, enhancing the ability to focus on conversation without getting overwhelmed by surrounding sounds.
  2. Rapid Speech: People often speak quickly, merging or slurring words, which can be particularly difficult for individuals with hearing loss. This module helps in improving the understanding of rapid speech patterns.
  3. Competing Speaker: The ability to focus on a single speaker where multiple conversations are happening is incredibly useful. LACE trains users to focus on one voice, filtering out others.
  4. Auditory Memory: Remembering what was said is as important as understanding it in the moment. This component works on enhancing auditory memory to improve recall in conversations.

The Benefits of LACE

The impact of LACE goes beyond just improved listening.

  • Increased Comprehension: By focusing on understanding speech in various challenging environments, users find a noticeable improvement in their ability to understand and follow conversations.
  • Communication Confidence: As listening skills improve, so does confidence in social situations. Many users report feeling more engaged and willing to participate in conversations.
  • Reduced Listening Effort: Struggling to listen can be exhausting. LACE teaches strategies to make listening more efficient, thereby reducing fatigue.

Integrating LACE with Hearing Aids

While LACE is an effective stand-alone tool for improving listening skills, it is particularly powerful when used alongside hearing aids. The combination allows for a two-pronged approach: hearing aids enhance auditory input, while LACE trains the brain to process this input more effectively. We recommend LACE as a complementary strategy after your hearing aid fitting to maximize the benefits.
