When Ohk Energy received a call from an Aran Islands resident struggling to find support for their air to water heat pumps and solar thermal systems, the company quickly realised this was more than just a single service request.
Due to the complex logistics of travel, many service companies do not make the journey to Ireland’s islands, leaving residents without vital maintenance. As a result, some renewable systems on the Aran Islands had gone unserviced for up to ten years.
Once the Aran Island’s Energy Co-Op became aware, over 20 residents signed up to have their heat pumps and solar thermal systems serviced. One resident described the challenge of island living: “Being so connected to Ireland but not when you need something repaired is disheartening.”
Niall McKernan, Servicing Manager at Ohk Energy, explained why the company took on the challenge: “There’s a moral obligation for those who install renewable systems to ensure they’re supported long term. When we heard the need, we worked on the logistics and made a plan to go out. Some of the systems we came across were in an awful state, some never serviced since installation many years ago.”
The Ohk Energy team spent several long days and nights on the islands, working until 10pm on some occasions, to ensure every household received attention.
“It was a really busy couple of days,” McKernan continued. “But it’s all worth it when you get the feedback from customers. We hope to keep this relationship going and become the go to servicing specialists not only for mainland Ireland but for all the islands.”
The visit highlighted a widespread issue. Many homeowners are unaware that their solar thermal and heat pump require annual servicing.
The benefits of this include:
Improved efficiency: Systems run at full capacity, delivering maximum comfort.
Lower costs: Regular servicing reduces running costs and avoids costly breakdowns.
Safety: Maintenance prevents risks to homes and families.
Longevity: Servicing extends the lifespan of systems, protecting homeowners’ investment.
Ohk Energy’s successful Aran Islands operation underlines the company’s commitment to customers nationwide. Beyond installation, the company is determined to ensure that renewable technology continues to serve communities for years to come, no matter where they are located!
