Investigations are underway after a woman died in a house fire in Moneygall, close to the Tipperary / Offaly border.

Gardaí have confirmed the alarm was raised at around 10pm on Friday and that emergency services attended the scene a short time later.

The main road through the village was closed overnight with local diversions being put in place as fire crews and gardai dealt with the fire.

"The fire was brought under control by the Fire Service and the body of a woman, aged in her 60s, was recovered from inside the residence," confirmed a garda spokesperson who added that no other injuries were reported at the time.

"The local coroner has been notified, and the woman’s body has been conveyed to the mortuary at Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore," said the spokesperson.

It's understood arrangements are being made to conduct a post-mortem examination on the woman's body.
