Krem Gelateria & Café - Where Westport celebrates Pancake Tuesday

Pancake Tuesday in Westport, Bridge Street has its own gentle buzz.

At Krem Gelateria & Café, the town’s sweet living room, the windows glow warmly against the February air.

Inside, the counter bursts with colour, and there’s that unmistakable lift when coffee, warm batter and fresh gelato share the same space. Krem may look like a modern gelato bar, but it’s built on old-world craft.

Owner and fourth-generation gelato maker Graham Byrne continues a family tradition that began in the 1930s, when ice cream was a rare luxury and recipes were guarded like heirlooms. That heritage still shapes everything here.

Flavours aren’t just described as “nice” - they’re favourites people return for, year after year.

Pancake Tuesday is when Krem’s delicious crepes truly take centre stage. At one table, children lean over to debate which crepe is best, there are so many to choose from, at another, someone justifies a Sweet Feast crepe “because Lent starts tomorrow” and everyone nods in instant understanding.

Plates arrive with glorious folds of crepes, drizzled with an extra bit of chocolate, filled with fruit and oozing marshmallows. What keeps it from feeling like just another treat spot is how much of the west of Ireland is folded into everything.

Local milk in the gelato, coffee from a Westport roaster, ingredients sourced from just down the road. It gives the place a rooted, familiar warmth rather than a holiday gloss.

There’s nostalgia in the air: parents remembering their own childhood while their kids discover decedent crepes, with chocolate smiles.

Step back out onto Bridge Street and Pancake Tuesday feels somehow upgraded. You’re not just ticking a tradition off the calendar; you’re walking away with a small, sweet memory that already feels like it will be part of future years too.
