Sentencing of DJ Carey in fraud case delayed on medical grounds

The sentencing of DJ Carey has been postponed until Friday after a court heard the former GAA star is in hospital.

The ex-hurler was due to be sentenced on Wednesday after pleading guilty in July to inducing people to give him money after fraudulently claiming to have cancer.

At the hearing at the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin, his legal team told Judge Martin Nolan that Carey had a history of heart conditions and that he was in Portiuncula University Hospital in Ballinalsoe, Co Galway.

Carey was taken to A&E on Monday and was waiting for a bed on Wednesday, the court was told.

His sentencing has been delayed to Friday on medical grounds.

Carey, 54, is one of the most acclaimed figures in GAA history, having won five All-Ireland titles and nine All-Star awards.

When he retired from inter-county hurling in 2006, he was hailed as an “idol” for young players and a legend of the game.

Carey appeared in court in late 2023 charged with 21 counts under the Theft and Fraud Offences Act, at which point a four-week trial was expected to take place this year.

But on July 2, his legal team told the court a jury would not be required before he pleaded guilty to 10 counts.
