Gardai launch investigation after woman is assaulted while visiting inmate at Cork Prison

Investigations are underway after a woman was allegedly assaulted whilst visiting an inmate at Cork Prison. 

An Garda Síochána have confirmed they received a report regarding the incident, which occurred at the prison along Rathmore Road, on Wednesday, September 17. The alleged assault is said to have taken place at approximately 7pm.

A woman, aged in her 20s, received treatment for non-life threatening injuries at the scene, before being taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

It has been widely reported that she appeared shocked following the assault. The woman and inmate are believed to be known to one another. 

Cork Prison is a closed, medium security prison for adult males. It is the committal prison for counties Cork, Kerry and Waterford. It has an operational capacity of 296 inmates. 

The Irish Prisons Service has been contacted for comment. 

Investigations are ongoing.
